A Poem: Basic Human Rights

By Moraene Roberts

We may be poor,

but we have the right

to know our date of birth and name,

we have the right

to work for a living,

to have a home and feel no shame,

we have the right

to speak out against injustice,

so hear our voice,

we have the right

to raise our children

and to have freedom of choice,

we have the right

to live in peace,

with respect and dignity.

We may be poor

but we have the right

to our own identity.
